A keepsake miscellany for the dog-minded, set among vintage photographs of the little butterfly-eared spaniel of the European courts.
The Vintage Dog Scrapbook gathers the essays, anecdotes, poems and literary excerpts that dog owners have written about dogs - the loyalty, the mischief, the long fireside companionship - and prints them among photographs of the Papillon drawn from rare breed volumes in our library. The text speaks for dogs generally; the pictures are the breed's alone.
The erect-eared form of the Continental toy spaniel, painted by Titian, Watteau and Fragonard long before it had a name, the Papillon takes that name from the wings its ears make. Its drop-eared twin is the Phalene, the moth.
This edition features:
- Essays, anecdotes, poems and literary excerpts on dogs and dog owning
- Vintage photographs of the breed, taken from rare volumes in our own library
- A gift for the canine-inclined, and for the devotee of one particular toy spaniel
- Short pieces made for dipping into, at any hour of the evening
