In this thorough yet accessible resource for churches and others that are genuinely interested in helping the less fortunate, Michael Bethune presents a unique and candid look at the relationship between the church and the less fortunate as he addresses many of the issues and concerns that others have been reluctant to confront. He believes that the church and other organizations that serve the less fortunate can and must do better when it comes to how it is that we treat those that frequent our soup kitchens, clothing pantries, shelters, etc. Bethune asserts that many of today's churches have strayed far from the model of compassion that Jesus embodied and exemplified throughout His earthly ministry, a model that embraces and reaffirms the humanity of all people regardless of their social, educational, and economic location. As a result he has created a 12-stage process designed to move churches back in the right direction, back towards compassion.

About the Author
Michael Bethune was born in Paterson, NJ. Faced with seemingly insurmountable odds due to poverty and the seductive lure of the inner-city streets, Michael opted for the military as an alternative route to a better life. During his second year of service Michael's army unit was deployed to Honduras, Central America and served six months in a "hazardous duty" zone. They supported the Honduran Military by building housing, aircraft runways and providing tactical perimeter security as the Honduran Army resisted the continual surge of ruthless Nicaraguan rebels known as "the Sandinista." During this time Michael (like many others) began experimenting with various substances in attempt to anesthetize the reality of the life-threatening situation that he now found himself in. As a result, by the time that he eventually exited the military he was a confused young man who continued turning to substances as a means of coping with life. In 1993, ready to give up on life after emerging from a 48-hour drug induced stupor alongside the railroad-tracks in his beloved hometown of Paterson, Michael admitted to himself that his life had now deteriorated to the point where it was "void of hope." He needed help desperately! Be sure to read Michael's full bio below to learn more about his amazing story. michaelbethune.com
