Women of Substance is the tale of a young Muslim girl who leaves her safe and sheltered home in East Africa, and travels to the rugged coast of Newfoundland. She has no way of knowing what lies in store, and continuously struggles for acceptance.

Her travels continue when she leaves St. John's and moves to Toronto. Having fought so hard to adapt once, she then goes through the process again as she marries, and then divorces.

However, her real journey begins as she struggles to come to terms with life as a single mother, and as a woman who must become--at last--self-reliant.
